Monica Tyran is a printmaker who describes her creative process as “rooted in constant processing of experiences and cyclic patterns of life and the everyday.” She has been working out of her studio in Arabi, LA for 6 months and will use this grant to secure 8 more months of studio rent, obtain screen-printing equipment and materials, and purchase a liability insurance policy. “My focus is cultivating a space, separate from my home base, where all of what I’ve been learning and doing can continue to bloom and grow and continue to establish a more solid footing in the art community,” says Tyran. “It's a quiet and quaint environment that allows me to immerse myself in projects, processes, and experiment with new ideas that I couldn’t have due to limited space in my home, which is also my office.”
She plans to hold an open studio to showcase her work and “be in deep conversation with my peers and community to further push the work and to gain more experience speaking about my work and process in public.” She describes the investment in studio rent as a “short term investment (that) connects to my long term goal and will give me the momentum and ability to sustain my practice as I am gathering resources to shift from making art part-time to full-time.”
Tyran earned a BA in Visual Arts from Dillard University and a MA in Arts Administration from the University of New Orleans. She has studied screen printing and printmaking at Penland School of Arts & Crafts and letterpress and bookmaking at San Francisco Center for the Book. Her work has been exhibited at the New Orleans Community Printshop, the Contemporary Arts Center, and the Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans and at Stoveworks in Chattanooga, TN. Previously, she served an internship with International Studio & Curatorial Program in Brooklyn, sponsored by Art Table, and worked for YAYA as the Program and Studio Coordinator 2008-2014.
