RAYMOND ROLLINS
Houston, Texas
2021-2022 Scholarship Art League Houston
Mini Grant 2018-2019 & 2019-2020
Raymond Rollins is a painter and mixed media artist whose scholarship supports his ongoing studio practice. He will take courses in classical figure painting, which he hopes will improve his work by improving his understanding of the physical form. The ceramics course will give him the opportunity to expand his sculptural practice. “Sculpture, to me, brings what I see into this reality. It’s a way for me to give physical form, showing what normally can’t be seen by others. Sculpture also requires the painting element, combining the two makes an actual being, something that takes up real space, helping me to feel a little less alone.”

Rollins works with themes of human emotion, often creating from the dark place in which he finds himself. He views creating as a form of medicine, an act that gives him a voice and purpose. "My desire to create has led me into using multiple mediums to further express myself visually. I have an unquenchable passion for art; it has and will always be an essential aspect of my life." He strives to create work that speaks to and challenges the ideals of what is monstrous and what is peaceful.

Rollins has recently exhibited work at YAYA’s 30th Anniversary Gala and the Chocolate & Art Show in Houston where he currently resides. He has worked as an artist and designer for Bound 4 Glory Ministries, Kingdom Building Blocks, Gifted, Zeeda Much Love and B4G Records.
Raymond was active in the YAYA guild 1995-2000.
