New Orleans native Kara Crowley considers herself a storyteller through painting portraits. She continues to highlight locals of the New Orleans community to evoke the importance of their being impacting the world. She also highlights locals, youth, & Black Activists of NOLA to help them embrace their identities and help the community view themselves in positive yet powerful settings in public spaces.

This grant will assist Crowley achieve the goal of creating a mobile interactive mural to be installed on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard. “I would like to create an interactive mural/ installation piece in which features some of our well known activists of New Orleans such as Oretha Castle Haley, Rosa Freeman Keller, & Sybil Haydel-Moria,” she says. The mural would not only reflect the accomplishments of these women, but also serve as a tool to inspire activism in those who view and interact with the installation. She imagines the mural traveling through the city, stopping in different Black areas to serve as an educational tool and uplifting experience. “As a black female artist, I believe it's my goal to inspire others through storytelling our history, through use of portraits. Especially if it involves, black women, who continue to make history, which is not acknowledged as much as it should be,” reflects Crowley.

Kara Crowley first joined the YAYA Guild in 2008.
