2023-2024 Scholarship North Carolina State University
Amira Slocum is pursuing a Masters of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning and a certificate in Disaster Resilience at North Carolina State University. She earned a BS in environmental studies from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. “My undergraduate degree allowed me to grow as a researcher and scientist while also reintroducing me to issues I’d forgotten about - environmental inequality and environmental racism,” says Slocum. “Through design, I can create landscapes that are inclusive to everyone with a focus on improvement in mental and physical wellness, especially for those in communities who need healing the most. Because of intentional racial injustices within landscapes and the field of design, it is pertinent that there be representation in the field to better the landscapes that inadvertently shape us.” Slocum wants to return the love she felt as she grew up in New Orleans to communities and ecosystems.
Photography and clay sculpting are Slocum’s preferred creative mediums. So far, her biggest challenge while earning her masters has been learning to design landscapes digitally, as she is used to working by hand. She will be interning as a research assistant at a landscape architecture firm the summer of 2023.
Amira Slocum first joined the YAYA Guild in 2015.
