Derroles Taylor is a textile artist and fashion designer whose creations are inspired by New Orleans culture. She has experience creating costumes for Mardi Gras Indians and kings and queens of carnival. These traditions are reflected in her work through embellishments, adornments and bold colors, textures, and patterns. “I don't consider my work limited to fashion design,” says Taylor, “my goal is to create wearable textile artworks and installations.” Her love for textiles dates back to her childhood and many of her skills are self-taught. She harnesses traditional sewing techniques alongside modern art and design to build one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable art.

This grant is a continuation of Taylor’s 2023-2024 award, That Collection 8, a collection of eight wearable art pieces created through a fusion of quilting, sewing, and painting. The three dimensional collection will challenge traditional fashion boundaries, taking Taylor’s work from the fashion runway to a fine arts exhibit space. This grant will support exhibit event costs and see the eight pieces of wearable art through the final phases of construction, giving Taylor the opportunity to expand her artistic network, elevate her profile, and inspire others through the transformative power of wearable art.

Derroles Taylor first joined the YAYA Guild in 2000.
