Jerri Brown is pursuing a BA in Visual Communications - Graphic Design from Delgado Community College. His art practice spans many disciplines, including photography, illustration, printmaking, filmmaking, and animation. “Some things that inspire and influence me are music, films, people, and life,” says Brown, noting how music can trigger dopamine release in the brain, boosting positive feelings. He recognizes that his creative practice has a positive impact on his mental health and hopes to deliver the same impact to his audience: “Simply making cool-looking art that can affect the brain and hopefully make people feel happy, powerful, or the specific emotion I am looking for.”
The mosaic style of Brown’s digital illustrations is inspired by African scarification – permanently marking the body by cutting, burning, or branding the skin to create scars in a set pattern or design. He begins his creative process with photography, then turns the photos into illustrations. “My most recent work involves having models wear all black and photographing them in industrial environments,” explains Brown. “I have my models pose while making different angles with their bodies. I use the lines to convey movement, perspective, and emotion in my pieces,” he states, noting that the angles showcase vulnerability, confidence, and strength.
Jerri Brown is an active member of the YAYA guild, which he joined in 2014.
