Sofia Olexia-Daigle is pursuing a BFA in Studio Art at Tulane University, with a second major in Secondary Education and a minor in Strategy, Leadership, and Analytics (SLAM). “I am enjoying my glassblowing class the most because I am learning to make molds, carve wooden molds, and blow into them,” she says. In addition to her courses at Tulane, she has been spending her Sundays studying metalsmithing jewelry.
A significant portion of Olexia-Daigle’s work consists of ceramic doll forms depicting women. “Much of my work centers on women's strengths and challenges as mothers, daughters, professionals, and caregivers and the societal barriers they face,” she explains. She enjoys embellishing their dresses with various mediums and has recently begun incorporating found objects, glass and metal to her signature sculptures. Inspired by her environment, she includes elements of wetlands and wildlife elements in select works. As a Louisiana native, she is passionate about coastal restoration. Reflecting on her artistic process, she says, “It’s a process of inquiring, examining, and digesting everyday interactions and translating those experiences into something tangible to share with the world.”
Sofia Olexia-Daigle graduated from New Harmony High School and New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in 2022. She first joined the YAYA guild in 2017.
