Amira Slocum is pursuing a Masters of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning with certificates in City Design and Disaster Resilience from North Carolina State University. “My passion behind creating landscapes is design based on developing healing spaces for people to use,” she says. Slocum utilizes programs such as Sketch Up, Lumion and Autocad to render digital models of the sites she envisions. When she needs to communicate an idea quickly, she sketches with drawing utensils, watercolors or oil pastels. “I am constantly incorporating my knowledge learned from YAYA into projects that I provide in class,” she adds.

She recognizes the vital role artists play in contributing to landscape and community and strives to highlight the voices of those who use and shape outdoor spaces. Inspired by her love for green spaces and the connection between art and the natural world, her practice is for anyone who wants to be immersed in nature. “I design because I had plenty of green and safe spaces to enjoy with friends and family growing up. It was a way for everyone to come together. I feel it is important for communities to be able to come together, as this develops bonding within the community allowing people to heal,” she reflects.

Slocum worked as a Landscape Architect Intern in Summer 2023. She presented research at an American Society of Landscape Architects conference and served as a moderator for the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture. She earned a BS in environmental studies from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 2021 and first joined the YAYA Guild in 2015.
